Which joint is troubling you?

Choose the joint for a detailed guide — what the operation involves, recovery, risks, cost drivers and questions patients ask. Knee and hip replacement are the most common operations Dr. Naresh performs; shoulder, elbow and ankle replacement are done for selected patients when arthritis or injury has destroyed the joint.

Knee replacement

Total, partial and revision knee replacement for advanced arthritis. The most common joint replacement — full guide with recovery timeline and 12 FAQs.

Hip replacement

Total and partial hip replacement for arthritis, avascular necrosis (AVN) and hip fractures in older adults — including the AVN and fracture decisions families ask about.

Shoulder replacement

Total shoulder replacement, and reverse shoulder replacement when the rotator cuff is irreparably torn, for arthritis and complex fractures of the shoulder in selected patients.

Elbow replacement

For severe arthritis (often rheumatoid) and complex elbow fractures in older adults, where pain and stiffness no longer respond to other treatment.

Ankle replacement

An option for end-stage ankle arthritis in selected patients, as an alternative to fusion, to keep some ankle movement and improve walking.

Revision surgery

Re-doing a previous replacement that has loosened, worn, dislocated or become infected — more complex than a first operation, planned with detailed imaging.

The decision

When is joint replacement actually needed?

Joint replacement is a proven solution when conservative treatment — medication, physiotherapy, weight management, bracing and injections — no longer controls pain, and the joint is limiting daily life. It is not the first step, and at Sharada Orthopaedic Centre most patients with joint pain are treated without it.

  • Pain most days, including at rest or at night, despite treatment
  • Difficulty walking, climbing stairs, dressing or sleeping because of the joint
  • Stiffness or deformity that has progressed over months
  • X-rays showing the joint surfaces worn through (bone-on-bone)
If you recognise some of these, a consultation and standing X-rays will show where you stand. If replacement is not yet needed, we say so — and give you a plan that works until it is.

What to expect

Your joint replacement journey, step by step

Consultation, X-rays, pre-operative assessment and all non-surgical care happen at the clinic in Bowenpally. Surgery is performed by Dr. Naresh at an associated hospital with the anaesthesia team and operation theatre facilities joint replacement needs, with cashless insurance support for eligible policies. Every follow-up is with Dr. Naresh at the clinic.

Consultation

Examination, standing X-rays, your history and goals. Plain-language explanation of what is wrong and every option — in Telugu, Hindi or English.

Fitness check

Blood tests, ECG and physician review. Diabetes, heart and blood-pressure issues are optimised first — age alone is not a barrier.

Surgery & stay

Usually under spinal anaesthesia; 1–2 hours for a knee or hip. Most patients go home in about 3–5 days, walking with a walker.

Rehabilitation

A written physiotherapy plan from day one, reviewed by Dr. Naresh at every follow-up until you are back to normal life.

After surgery

Recovery: what most patients can expect

Typical milestones after knee or hip replacement. Recovery varies with age, general health and how consistently physiotherapy is done; shoulder, elbow and ankle follow their own timelines, explained at consultation.

Day 1–2

Standing and walking a few steps with a walker; exercises begin.

Week 1–2

Walking indoors with a walker; wound review; swelling is normal.

Week 3–6

Longer walks, often with a stick; stairs with support; most daily activities.

Week 6–12

Walking without aids for many patients; driving once the leg is strong.

3–6 months

Continued gains in strength and comfort; walking, swimming, cycling.

Pain in the first days is expected and managed with a planned combination of medicines; it settles steadily. Physiotherapy is the single biggest factor in the final result — which is why it is written down, not left to chance.
Longevity

How long does a joint replacement last?

15–20 years is typical for a modern knee or hip implant, and many last longer. Longevity depends on the patient’s weight and activity, bone quality, accurate positioning at surgery and avoiding infection. Younger, heavier or very active patients wear implants faster and may need a revision later — one reason surgery is timed carefully rather than done at the first sign of arthritis.

Honest expectations

Risks, stated plainly

Joint replacement is one of the most reliable operations in orthopaedics, but like all surgery it carries risks: infection, blood clots, stiffness, dislocation (hip), implant loosening or wear over time, and rare complications from anaesthesia. Your individual risk depends on age, diabetes control, heart and lung health, weight and smoking.

We explain these before you decide, take specific precautions, and see you regularly afterwards. Most patients experience a marked reduction in pain and better mobility — no surgeon can promise a particular outcome, and we do not.

Cost & insurance

What decides the cost of joint replacement in Hyderabad

Costs vary by joint, implant type, hospital room category, length of stay and whether it is a first-time or revision surgery. Cashless insurance is accepted for eligible policies at the associated hospital, and a written estimate covering surgeon, hospital and implant is given before admission. Bring your policy details to the consultation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about joint replacement in Hyderabad

How long does a joint replacement last?
Typically 15–20 years for modern knee and hip implants, and often longer, depending on the patient’s weight, activity, bone quality, accurate positioning at surgery and avoiding infection. Younger, very active patients may need a revision later in life.
What is the average cost of joint replacement surgery in Hyderabad?
Costs vary by joint, implant type, hospital room category, length of stay and whether it is a first-time or revision surgery. A written estimate covering surgeon, hospital and implant is given before admission, and cashless insurance is accepted for eligible policies. Bring your policy details to the consultation.
Do you accept insurance or cashless claims?
Yes. Joint replacement for arthritis, AVN or fracture is covered by most health-insurance policies, subject to waiting periods and limits. Cashless facility is available for eligible policies at the associated hospital where surgery is performed, and our team helps with the paperwork.
Is joint replacement safe for elderly patients?
Age alone is not a barrier. Patients in their 70s and 80s undergo knee and hip replacement routinely when a physician has assessed heart, lung and kidney fitness; modern anaesthesia and early mobilisation make this safer than it once was. Diabetes and blood pressure are optimised before surgery.
How soon can I walk after joint replacement surgery?
Most patients stand and take a few steps with a walker within a day or two of surgery under physiotherapy supervision, walk with a stick by about 3–6 weeks, and without aids by 6–12 weeks, depending on age, general health and effort in physiotherapy.
Will I need physiotherapy after the surgery?
Yes. A personalised physiotherapy programme is the single biggest factor in the final result — it restores strength, movement and confidence. You get a written plan from day one and it is reviewed at every follow-up visit.
Which joint replacements does Dr. Naresh perform?
Knee and hip replacement (total, partial and revision) are the most common; shoulder, elbow and ankle replacement are performed for selected patients whose joints have been destroyed by arthritis or injury. The right operation, if any, is decided after examination and imaging.
Where is the surgery done?
Consultation, diagnosis and non-surgical treatment happen at Sharada Orthopaedic Centre in Bowenpally. The operation itself is performed by Dr. Naresh at an associated hospital with full anaesthesia and operation-theatre facilities, with cashless support for eligible policies — and your follow-up stays with the same doctor at the clinic.
Do you do robotic joint replacement?
No. Dr. Naresh performs conventional joint replacement with well-established instruments and techniques. Robotic and computer-assisted systems are alignment tools; published results show that surgeon experience and careful technique remain the biggest factors in a good outcome.
Can I get a second opinion if surgery has been advised elsewhere?
Yes. Bring your X-rays, reports and the advice you were given. Dr. Naresh will tell you honestly whether replacement is needed now, later, or not at all — and what the non-surgical options are.
